Making the longest chain

Walt:
  1. Write a recount
  2. Integrate maths and writing

On monday morning we made a paper chain using red and green paper. We did this because we were learning about estimating. My partner was Ifa. We used A5 paper to make this chain.

Firstly we estimated how long our chain would be. My estimation was 179 cm. Ifa’s estimated that the chain would be 140 cm. We both had a discussion about the width and length so we went with Ifa’s plan.

Next we cut the red and green paper into strips. We tried to cut the strips even but it turned out to be crooked .When we started to look at our chain we could tell that the red strips were smaller than the green strips. After we cut them we joined it with sellotape.

Thereafter we measured our chain with a one metre ruler. Our chain was more than one metre so we grabbed the ruler again. Our chain was 192 centimeters but if we were to pull our chain I think that we would of got to 2m.

Finally we compared the measurement with our estimation. It turned out the I was the closest to getting the answer right. Then we compared our chains with the other students and we were around the middle. The person that made the longest chain was Viliami he made it to  3m and 83 centimeters.

If we were to cut the strips into skinner pieces it would of been longer and if we used the width instead of the length it might of been longer.

Length of chains

Length of chains
  1. Arrange length in Order.
  2. Find mean, Median, Mode, Range.
  3. Explain the differences in length.

Pairs
Length of Chain in centimetres
Ben and Dion
86
Wesley and Koliata
169
Lorenzo and Liam
170
Alyssa and Shanelle
192
Ifa and Tane
192
Andrea and Lana
200
Ketura and Serena
220
Stephanie and Cherish
286
Petuana and Yazmin
304
Munokoa and Samuel
320
Viliami and Howard
383
Mean: 229.3FullSizeRender.jpg
Median:200
Mode:192
Range:297

I think that everyone's chain was different because all of the students cut it differently.  Dion and Ben made the smallest chain because they cut the width thicker instead of thinner and their measurement was 86 centimetres . Viliami and Howard made the longest chain that was 383 centimetres. To do that they had to cut the strips thin and then that would’ve made them have more strips instead of less. The mean of this table was 229.3 cm, the Median was 200 cm,  the Mode was 192 cm, and the range was 297 cm.

E-asttle reading

Screenshot 2015-11-17 at 11.39.20 AM.png

Today I done a E-asttle reading test. We had thirteen minutes in each of the stages that we started. I had to set the 3-4 test because I am in the tuis. After I finished the test I started to feel nervous because I didn't want to get a low score for reading. I felt proud of my score because it was my first time getting a 4p. Next time I want to get a 4A.

Maths E-asttle

In this E-asttle test I got a 3A. I feel proud of my score because I thought that I would’ve got a 3p but I guess that I had luck. This E-asttle test made me think hard because I started to forget how to do it and the strategies to work out the answers. Next I want to get a 4B.

Reflection, Rotation, Translation

Walt: Revise transformation

Today we revisited how to do reflection, Rotate, and translation. I had to play this translation game online. At first I thought it was hard but then I went asking around how to do it. It took me a couple of minutes to know how to play the game. After I found out how to play the game it started to get interesting because of the shapes became harder to find how to do it. Next I would like to try and get a higher score than level 5.

Pie chart

Screenshot 2015-11-02 at 10.20.39 AM.png

Yesterday I done a pie chart. Everyone got to choose what animal they would like to be. We collected the data by show of hands. As you can see on my pie chart that most of the children would be a dog and then rabbit would be the second most choices.

Foil art

Today we done art. We used foil as our material to draw on. Firstly we drawed on the foil but then we flipped it and it had an effect that made it pop out. I enjoyed doing this art because it was my first experience doing it.

Double bar graph

Walt:Use online tools to  draw a double bar graph

Boys watched  Boys not watched  Girls watched  Girls not watched
        10 3       5 7

Today we made a double bar graph using an online tool but before we done that we had to collect the data off the children. We collected this data by children putting their hand up if they watched it and if they did not watch it. We used this data to make a double bar graph using an online tool. The blue indicates the people who did not watch and the black indicates who has watched it. I also think that more boys watched this game because it is a manly game and because the kick off was early in the morning.
