Year 8's funday

IMG_0680.JPGIMG_0694.JPG

Finally a day were our teachers let us do a fun day out with the senior side of the school.  This day was all about seeing how the year 8’s could manage a sports day for the senior students. On the fun day that the year 8’s prepared their was approximately 12 games that were going to be played. I had set up a game called rob the nest, to play this game I had 3 hoops and located a child to each set of hoop then I placed eight balls inside each hoop. Then the rules were simple for the kids to understand which were you can run to any hoop and take one ball then run back to your hoop and place it inside then carry on. Although I set up rob the nest I still found other games that the year 8’s made up interesting such as capture the flag which had water balloons which most groups wanted to play. At the end of the year 8’s fun day out we all assembled on the asphalt and the year 7’s and 8’s were given lollies and pears for preparing the fun sports day.

Chalk enlargement

This morning my class and I had went outside to do a maths activity. It was all about enlarging a photo that we liked. The photo that we liked we choose and inserted it into google drawings, after that I Placed a grid on the photo. My grid is 6 by 6 which means it has 36 squares in total. I choose for every 1 centimeter to 30 centimeters. I found doing this activity easier to do than I thought. Next I want to learn more about enlarging because I found it really fun to do.

Enlargement

webcam-toy-photo2.jpg

Yesterday we were learning about enlargement. Our task today for maths was to enlarge a picture of an ant, hat, dinosaur, or lion. As you can see I tried to enlarge a picture of an ant it sorta came as I pictured it but I drew the last part of the ant to big. The little picture of the ant is 9 centimeters and the large picture of the ant is 18 centimeters so the scale factor is 2. I had to count each square on each picture as I started to draw the larger ant so the measurements could be as precise as possibly. I found this drawing activity a bit difficult because the legs and the circle at the end was hard to get in the exact spots. After doing this activity I would like to learn more about co - ordinates.

Tessellation

Today in class we learnt about tessellation. A tessellation is a repeated pattern that has no gaps and doesn't overlap. To find a tessellation you have to choose a vertex which means a point where lines meet. Also you  need to find a polygon which is a shape with straight sides such as rectangles, octagons and more. Our tessellation for our repeated pattern was 3.4.3.

Perimeter shape shooter

Screenshot 2016-10-28 at 9.18.59 AM.png

Today I played this game called perimeter shape shooter. I found this game easy to play because I already know how to calculate perimeter. Playing this game helped me revise my perimeter and it also made me remember how to calculate perimeter. I really liked this game because it had 4 levels and it got harder each level and made me think abit. Next I would like to learn more about temperature in maths.

Basketball

IMG_1178.JPG

Today we had basketball training with our coaches Yaron and Malik. They come every wednesday to teach us different skills about basketball. We learnt to catch the ball with our hands in the shape of a triangle, Chest pass, Overhead pass, bounce pass and our last skill was the pocket pass. We even got to play piggy in the middle but we were only allowed to pocket pass to our partner but we played that game because we were learning about fake passing and tricking the person in the middle so they couldn’t intercept our passes.

Brooke Neal

Today we had Brooke Neal come into our class, to speak to us about 2016 olympics. She told us about what she found hard and easy in the olympics. Although now that she is an outstanding hockey player she had said when she was younger everyone use to call her a baby giraffe, because she would swing her arms and legs around everywhere. Also she said that she thought that it was really awesome when she had not only seen her mum and dad at her quater final game at the olympic but also her brother. Even though he had lost his game the day before he had still put in effort to come and watch her game and that gave her that extra boost to try harder. Also she always had a poster every morning hang up on her wall to always remind her that
  • Nothing can stop me!
  • I am powerful
  • I show pride
  • I will do my best - everyday.

Star gazing

Screenshot 2016-10-21 at 9.45.11 AM.pngScreenshot 2016-10-21 at 9.44.28 AM.png

About a week ago I played this fraction game called star gazing. To play this game you would have to look on the microscope for the fraction that is pointing towards the planets then type it in the square box in the left bottom corner. I think that this game was easy to play because in class we had been working on fractions and revised what we already knew. I really liked this game but there should've been levels that made each question harder.

Throw back - Metaphors

IMG_0187.JPG
Walt: Match metaphors with their meaning in sport and non-sport activities

Firstly we had to get into groups of 3 or 4. I worked with Havea, Huntah and Zain. The students that were in the target writing group weren’t allowed to help because they had done this activity before so they just had to watch the rest match it together. I think when we were doing this activity it was interesting because it was my first time doing it. I think after doing this activity I would like to add some of these metaphors into my writing.

Acrostic poem - Panic

Walt: Write an acrostic poem using alliteration

People panicked and
Anxiously agonized about the storm.
Nick noticed nightmares of angry clouds approaching.
Icebergs injured innocent people.
Cyclones collided in california.

First day of school 2016

This photo was taken on the very first day of school. We were all put into groups in the hall to do maths with room 7. It was easier being in a bigger group because we got more answers to think about. When we compared our answers most of us had the same.

The trees danced back and forth as the wind passed by,
The waves crashing as an old man's dashes pass
Stepping into the water made him feel the warmth of a hot bath.

Prefixes and suffixes

Screenshot 2016-02-18 at 11.29.03 AM.png

A while ago I learnt how to play this online activity. This activity is about prefixes and suffixes I thought this activity was interesting to play because it was my first time doing something like this. Next time I play this I would like to have harder questions.

Mathletics

Last week our school had been assigned to play an online maths game but this game wasn’t normal because it was a competition that was going on for a week. In my class I am coming second and my mate Zain is coming first. I think if i tried a little bit better I could've been coming first. Next I want to learn more about converting fractions into percentages.

Chalk art

Today we had finally done our art. We had chosen today because it was a nice sunny day.
We all had to choose a olympic sport that was going to be played at rio and draw it with chalk on the ground. I think it was a fun art to do because it was everyone's first time doing it. Some people had come up with some great ideas like skiing, Biathlon and other great sports that I wouldn’t of thought of. My sport was shooting it was a bit hard to draw the gun because I didn’t know what size to draw it so I drew it big. I would really like to do another art project like this.

Math man division

Today I revised division. I played a division game called maths man it was my fifth time playing that game. It's easy at the start but as the levels get higher the questions get harder. I reached Level 11 as you can see. I personally think I could've gotten to a higher level but I just wasn’t concentrating. Next I want to learn more faster strategies to solve division problems.

Mr yamasaki

Today we had Mr Yamasaki come into our class and teach us about his culture which is Japanese. He is only staying in New Zealand for a few weeks then he is going to fly back to Japan. He teaches us about his culture and we teach him about English, but today he had taught us how to make a origami crane it was a bit hard at the start but most of us got there in the end.

Everyday theatre

IMG_0350.JPG

At school today Room 7 and 8 had 2 visitors come into their classes. Kaitlin the lady that came into our class to play really knew how to make us laugh. While she was in our class she taught us different games and acting. Our game was about a boy named T, his parents who had split up and the mother’s new boyfriend Brian and daughter Becca. Everyone enjoyed each game we played with Kaitlin because she always made everyone laugh. I enjoyed the part when we had to say what our characters were thinking because some students really had good jokes but the hardest part was the end because we only had 10 seconds to name a character and say what advice they could use. I think that this activity was one of the best school activities that we have done in awhile. Working in a team was cool because we got to use each other's ideas.

Alien angles

alien angles.PNG
A few days ago I played alien angles. It was a bit difficult at the start but then it got easier as I carried on playing. I thought it was challenging at the start because I never used a protractor but after awhile I asked my mate and he had told me to use a protractor. So when I did I was rescuing aliens in no time. Next I want to learn more about different angles.

Measuring angles

MEASUREMENT.PNG

Today we had played this online game called measuring angles. It was a bit hard to understand how to play it but when I started to carry on I slowly started to figure out how to play the game. To find the answer you have to find out what is the numbers between the two red rays. I think that this game would be suitable for year 7 and 8 students. Next I want to learn more about angles.

Designing a pattern on cup cakes

IMG_3616.JPG

Yesterday we had to create our own patterns on our muffins. We had to use 2 fruits and 1 of anything else. It was easy to come up with the pattern but I struggled when I had to try and place our designs on. We had done all this because this week at school we have just been learning about patterns. My favorite part about doing this was eating it.

Netball

Today it was our last netball session with our coach Anne. I thought at first it was going to be boring because it was a girls game, but when I actually started playing I found Netball fun to play. I wish that today wasn’t going to be the last day of netball because it was a very fun day today and everyone had a great time playing netball.

The visit

Last month a group of adults had done a 80 kilometer walk to raise money for the schools around the Glen Innes area. My school which is Glen Innes got an spectacular amount of money from the people that done the 80 kilometer walk. The money that we had gotten given was $4,600 everyone inside the school was so shocked that we were given that much money.

A few weeks after that two of the people came back to our school to visit the two senior classes room 7 and 8. Their names were Dreydon and Kate they came into each class on Tuesday to show a presentation about the 80 kilometer walk that they had done to raise money. They had a time limit which was to finish the 80 kilometer walk under 24 hours. The Hillary trail is what they had walked through day and night but it wasn’t so easy because they had to walk through Thunder, lightning and even hail. As if the 80 kilometer walk was hard enough for them imagine the Horrible weather they had to walk through.

They had also came into each class not to only show their presentation but help each student set a goal for themselves. Their motivation was S.M.A.R.T and they told us what each letter had stood for. I then had help making up my goal which was to answer question faster in my next maths test.

I was so amazed how organised they were when they went to go out on their 80 kilometer walk and how well they all communicated to each other while walking through that horrible weather. I think out of all the things that Dreydon and Kate taught us I think I would be able to learn how to communicate better while I work in a team. Overall this Dreydon and Kate had sent us a delightful package which had a card and some very yum pineapple lumps a few days after their appearance.

How to play gutter board

Success criteria
  1. Write in a passive voice
  2. Use precise words

How to play Gutter Board

Gutter board is a game that is very basic to learn to play. Gutter board is a 2-4 player game. It is played with a tennis ball, gutter board and 4 lines. It can be a fun game to play.

First, a gutter board, tennis ball, and a partner would be needed to play gutter board. 1-4 lines would have to be marked on the ground for each opponent to stand behind. Each of the 4 lines have to get further away from the gutter board to make it more challenging. The lines also have to have different scores.

Next, where to throw the ball and how to catch. When standing behind one line, the target is to aim the ball to the centre of the gutter board. Then catch the ball as it flies through the air and if the catch is succeeded 1 point is given. Then carry on the same procedure until the game is finished.

When the last line is reached the ball has to be thrown to the gutter board 3 times and caught 3 times to win. When the last line is conquered the winners, stay on to play against another team while the losers wait in line again for another turn.

So those are the rules on how to play gutter board. It is a simple game to play and used with a little bit of equipment such as a gutter board, tennis ball, 4 drawn lines and opponents. If more than 4 players would like to play just add another gutter board and tennis ball and start playing together.

Summary- Ngā Tātarakihi o Parihaka

As Rarawa was kneading the dough she heard about the government taking over their village. A few days later the pakeha soldiers arrived and started taking down the defense wall and taking their crops. Then Api was planning on stopping the pakeha soldiers from taking over their land, but Rarawa and Rangi got worried because they were scared that their brothers were going to get taken away just like there dad and would get chucked in prison without having a trial. As the soldiers arrived Rarawa had swung the poi in time with the other girls but fear had scared the words out of her mouth. As the soldiers marched closer their rifles glanced against the light. The soldiers carried on marching past Rarawa, when aunty Maata came they just ignored her. Finally the soldiers stopped marching and somehow the Parihaka convinced the soldiers to turn back and leave us alone.

Jump Rope

On Friday our whole school had walked to Glen Innes town center to perform jump rope for the heart foundation. When our school arrived at Glen Innes town center we all had different places to sit. As our class went to go and sit down we had seen Dion our mate that has had a leg injury when he played soccer with him. We were all surprised to see him in Glen Innes town center with his mum and little brothers. He even let us sign his cast. Room 1 to 12 performed in the town center showing off their talent.

E-asttle maths

Maths e-asttle 2.PNG

Today we had to do our e-asttle maths test. It was easy but I just didn’t like reading the long questions that were given but I think I didn’t do really good because I am below my national standard for my year level. I wanted to get a higher mark but I guess next time I have to try extra hard to get an extra level high. Next I would like to get a better understanding of converting fractions into decimals.

Addiction

Alcohol is bad
it can make you turn very bad
maybe even sad
just turn around and i'll give you a hand
Don’t be scared because i’m a policeman.

This week my group has been researching and learning about addiction. We have been doing this because we are linking it to our topic study which is the human anatomy. So far this week I have been able to create my own addiction poster and a rap about alcohol. I think that the rap was hard to think of because it was my first time doing a rap about alcohol. Overall I really enjoyed doing this topic study.

In room 8 we have been learning about scatter graphs. First we had to make 3 different sizes of paper planes. We had to make sure 1 plane was small the other plane was medium and the last plane big. After making our different sizes of plane we had threw them and measured each of the planes distance in centimeters. While we measured our distance of our planes we had recorded the distances in a table that we had made in our maths book. Then we all plotted our planes measurement  in a scatter graph. After plotting our measurements we drew a straight line to join as many points as possible.

Play with words

Screenshot 2016-05-18 at 10.56.54 AM.png
Walt: Understand 2 meanings of puns.

A few days ago I was learning about puns which means a play of words. First there was a picture of our principal and the whole class had drawn eyes around his face because he always uses eyes by me as his pun. The real meaning of his pun means look at him. After that we had drawn eyes on the picture of the netball. We had drawn eyes on the netball because our teacher uses eyes on the ball as her pun when we play sports. The meaning of our teacher's pun is to keep looking at the the ball. I think it was fun drawing eyes around the teacher and on the netball. A pun that I had seen on TV was I was struggling to figure out how lightning works but then it struck me.

The Mad scientist

Walht: Write an interesting and enjoyable narrative

It was a hot Summer day when Franklin an mad scientist wanted to work on an experiment to make something turn into a giant. Franklin wasn’t like any normal scientist who wore big lab coats, he liked to dress up in streetwear clothing. His skin colour was pale, his eyes were light blue, His height was at average and he was an outgoing person with dark brown hair. Franklin wanted to Invent a potion to turn something into an giant.

“Baaaaaringgggg” Franklin’s alarm goes off for him to go on his daily afternoon stroll. Every corner franklin turned it was silent no noise at all, Franklin felt awkward knowing no one was around. Sweat dripping down Franklin's face as he got nervous. Franklin starts power walking towards the beach, as he hears music passing through his ears. As Franklin got near the beach then BOOM  he viewed everyone jumping up and down having an day out at the beach. Everyone pulled Franklin aside and made him eat bbq with them. “Mmmm the BBQ was delicious” Franklin said. Franklin wanted to stay and have fun with everyone but sadly Franklin had to leave to go to the secret lab.

Franklin arrives at the secret lab. Franklin was nervous as he walked inside the lab because it was his first time making a potion that could turn into a giant. Franklin then gathered all of the antidote together and started mixing them all. Franklin then started to get frustrated because the potion was coming out right. Franklin mixed and he twirled and he swirled the potions together but you could see frustration on his face as the potion wasn’t right.  SUDDENLY a ferocious gust of wind blew the potion all over Franklin. “AHHHH” Franklin yelled as he started growing bigger. “Everyone catch Franklin” the government said so we can experiment on him and find out how to turn things bigger. Franklin then got scared and ran behind the abandoned hospital hiding from the fbi. Franklin was shaking scared the ground was shaking and it felt like an earthquake was happening.

Franklin then stopped shaking. He opened the door to the abandoned hospital and walked thru. Franklin was worried that something terrible was going to happen to him. “Bang, Clash, Crash” Franklin falls over. “OUCHH! That was sore” Franklin said. All of a sudden franklin put a smile on his face, “Yasss” Franklin yelled I found the cure. Franklin was overwhelmed that he had found the cure and he drank it. “POOF” Franklin was back to being an normal human being again.

After Franklin transformed back into a human being he had promised to himself that he wouldn’t touch another chemical again. Franklin then went to his lab and threw out all of his antidotes and potions and never touched another potion again.
